Is this a Mole King?

Mark Banczak Dec 25, 2005 09:19 PM

I was down in the Everglades last week and found this guy with a ton of other snakes. According to the web sites I checked, Mole Kings aren't supposed to be in the Park but I don't see anything else that comes close.

Looks like one from here but it's hard to say. You need to post a closer sharper photo to say for sure.

It sure matches the pattern. I haven't found any pictures with the bright colors like this snake. Heck they are all shades of darker brown and muddy tan. Still, I would have to agree with you guys. Thanks.

Too bad though! I wish it had been a sfmk as I'm sure you do too.
Some young browns are very pretty with all that high contrast.
Most have a bad reputation for biting/musking and such. Big ones can definitely give you a bad bite.
On the sfmk, just think "prairie king" when trying to i.d. They're the only thing closely resembling them. Once in a while an anery corn, but not too often.
Keep on pluggin'.

I've seen some Brown Water snakes here in South Eastern Va. and I can say with their huge head and overall size, I wouldn't want to be tagged by one of them. Beautiful N. taxispilota
