roof defrosting tape for reptiles?

ecoguard_79 Dec 25, 2005 10:40 PM

hi
i was just looking on the vision rack systems website and saw that they use a heat cable in their racks.
here in qc, they sell a simular looking heat cable to defrost roofs in the winter, has anyone ever heard of this heat cable, and does anyone know if it would work on a racking system designed like the one on the vision site?
here is the site with the pics
http://www.visionproducts.us/racks/htm2/heating.html
i know these heat cables dont get very hot, just enough to melt snow and ice over time.
i am looking to set up a new home made racking system, and flexiwatt is not sold here because it doesnt meet the csa safety standards.
any ideas?

There was a time when there was no such thing as reptile heat tape (yes, I was here back when dinosaurs roamed, lol!). The heat tape that was used for water pipes was our improvised reptile heat tapes (cutting edge stuff back in the '80s and early '90s!), and I still have some in use now, over 15 years later! It is keeping my BPs warm as I type.

Bill had to cut out the thermostat that was already in the tapes, or they would come on only enough keep pipes above freezing. Once it was removed, he would wire it to a ceiling fan controller, so we could set it on low, med, or high. Not being a professional electrician, I can't recommend this method to anyone else, but it has sure worked great for us. Consult an electrician if you are concerned about hazards of electrical shock or possible fire hazards. Or you can just buy the Flex-watt tape that is designed for herps.
