And we wonder why rattlers don't have a fighting chance...

Carmichael Dec 26, 2005 09:14 AM

I came across this article the other day. At first, it seemed rather inoculous but after reading the last part of this professor's paper, that deals with eradication protocols, it made my stomach sick. To think that even at the highest level of the land of acadamia that we have idiots who don't know a darn thing about the value of rattlesnakes is very concerning. I guess we just keep trying to fight the good fight in rattlesnake conservation.

That is ridiculous. They shouldnt even allow that to be circulated! Perhaps we can all send this very intelligent individual a few letters?

What a moron!

This article is associatted with the Cooperative Extension Office. From talking to their agents and reading other material they publish this article doesn't surprise me. They are more into irradication pest control than educated solutions. If you go to their Texas website and read the individual "Poisonous Snakes" accounts it will make you cringe!

Two people who have dedicated a portion of their lives to rattle snake education. That article is over ten years old. The rattle snake exhibit in lake forest opened this fall...lets just hope we are not seeing more articles like that in the next ten years.

I too was sick to see the methods of ridding snakes...ask any kid who has been to the wildlife discovery center what the right thing to do is when they see a snake...I would bet they say to leave it alone.

We already know the place to start is not the height of acedemia

(note: what made me check the date on that paper was the use of the term ovoviviparous...things change when we learn new things)

Given the age and purpose of the article, I could not find what was offensive. The most effective suggested modes of control are things like fencing (like the sharks in Australia). Eradication is not encouraged or promoted, only recognized.
