Doing fine here...

PHRatz Dec 26, 2005 11:25 AM

I haven't mentioned Chip lately, seemed like I was talking about him all the time for a while there.
He's doing so well that there really isn't much to say now. He's eating very well on his own. Ever since he took that first bite on his own he hasn't been a problem, he's trying new food items although I still haven't been able to get him to eat any live bugs, not yet anyway.
When his "grandparents" saw him yesterday they were in awe watching him walk so quickly across the floor.
I am in awe too because I know he should be dead... but because he has a vet who did such a great job repairing him he's not only alive he's thriving.

Janie too is doing well. She seems to be fully recovered from that bout of respiratory illness that had her appetite off. She's not eating like a pig but she's eating enough.

I hope all of your turtles are doing well too.

Great news about Chip and Janie. My turtles are all hibernating in a hibernation box which is set up in our workshop. I can keep a close eye on them this way and soak them once a month. I have been doing this for 6 years, since moving to the midwest from Texas. Much colder here then in Houston, and since these are all Texas natives I don't want to subject them to frigid temps. I miss them, lol!

What do you have? Ornates, Gulf coast, 3 toed?
I'm far west of Houston in the desert side of the state but ooooh weeeeee it can get cold here. 2-3 weeks ago it was 7 degrees at sunrise. brrrrrrrr

Mine are all ornates, Janie has been here only since the end of May of this year. I was going to go against my own rule that a turtle that's been here for less than one year shall not hibernate until I know for sure it's 100% healthy.. I was going to allow her to hibernate but she sat outside in the cold pouring rain one night in Sept or Oct & that is what led to her being ill now. Since I have no idea where she came from, who knows if she was harboring something in the first place?

I only have one in hibernation right now & that's because he's the only one I have that I know for sure is a "tough man" wild turtle. He closed his door near the end of Oct. & hasn't opened it since.. he knows exaclty what he is doing.
The girls though.. I'm not so sure.

Chip of course cannot hibernate & Shell E has been here for so long. It took her 2 years to heal from her injuries & since then she doesn't even want to stay outside past dark in the summer. She'll come to the door wanting inside in summer if I don't come out for her in time.
Charity.. her story mixed with Janie's, she was outside in that cold rain when Janie was. She has shown no signs of illness but her vet said bring her in too.
So I have a group awake in the house right now.. pffttt good thing or not? LOL I dunno but at least I don't have to miss them.

Glad your boxies are doing well jan Mikey is doing good, I miss living with him, but in a couple months i am moving to an apartment I can take him to He is at my parents right now and I go every other day to care for him. He always acts like he is starving, I think because he doesn't seem me every day right now he figures he can mooch some more food than normal, lol.

Well, apparently I spoke too soon. Janie not eating enough had me concerned so it was back to the vet with her. The vet can still hear that congestion so Janie is back on antibiotics as of today.
I have half a bottle of strawberry flavored chloramphenicol left over from treating all my rats who were sick when I got them earlier this year. The vet worked out a dose for Janie, this should work out great.
No problem getting it into her today.

In fact today I finally found some live wax worms.. the darn pet store has been out of them. Janie really was interested in those, she ate plenty today.
10 days on this antibiotic & then it's a re-check.... no waiting now since there will be no more holidays.
I am very confident though that this is going to totally knock that problem right out of her for good.
