runny nose

amelthia Dec 26, 2005 01:20 PM

My 7mo old blood has had a runny nose for the past couple days. One nostril seems completely clear and doesn't make a sound but the other is runny and you can hear it when he breaths. He seems to be having no problem breathing and is acting completely normal and has been drinking a good amount. He hasn't eaten for awhile because he is in shed but he should be done within the next 3 days or so. I want to get him to a vet but my normal vet is 4 hrs away where I go to school at. I called every vet in the phone book in my home town and only one will even attempt to look at a reptile but he is not in until Thrus. Does anyone have any suggestions about what to do until then or what medications are usually prescribed. The receptionist said that the vet may be able to give me someting over the phone if I know what I want. I have raised the temp in his cage a couple degrees so it is around 85-90, and a cooler end around 75-80. He has a humidity box and the humidity in the rest of his cage is 65-70. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hey,
You're doing everything right. Just keep the temps up and the humdiity. It's going through a shed and sometimes, with the advent of, or an impending shed, they sometimes act as though they have a respiratory infection, when they in fact don't. Once they shed, they usually return to normal with no ill effects.

Thanks for the advice. I'll keep an eye on him until after he sheds and see if it clears up. He hasn't gotten any worse since it started 3 days ago, just stays the same.

Hey,
Good thing! when you see that he/she has cleared up (no longer cloudy or opaque), that is the time to throw a damp towel into the cage to facilitate shedding. It just makes it easy for them to shed.

Well his shed came off right on schedule, he always sheds 4 days after going clear, and his nose was all cleared up by that afternoon. I fed him a rat yesterday and he sucked it right down so I think he's ok.
