Possibly blind gecko

Julianne2 Dec 26, 2005 06:54 PM

My gecko has had a lot of trouble shedding lately, and I have been helping her. I place her in a warm moist cooler with warm moist paper towels and help get the skin off with a wet que-tip. Today however, when i tried to help her there was skin over her eyes and when some of it came off it seemed as though her eye was not there? There is a yellowish white fluid where her eye should be, she doesn't seem to be in a pain and it carrying on as usual but i'm still worried.
She is almost 9 years old, has a fat tail and eats regularly. She has a humid hide, basking area as well as two hides. She eats mealworms and has a 20 gal long tank.
Do you think she's blind? And if so do i need to do anything to help her? *I know why she has not been shedding well, i had stopped providing a day light that gave her UVA rays but i have given one back to her and hoepfully she will begin shedding better. (I wasn't a good owner with that one i know)

First off, don't blame yourself for the shed problem. Leopard Geckos DON'T require lighting. Some geckos sometimes just have trouble with shedding.

But I would sugest you take her to the vet in the morning to take care of that eye, may be some kind of infection in there.

Good Luck!

Sounds like an infection in the eye, posably from stuck shed and maybe rubing it to attempt to get it off. A vet can clean it and give you drops or ointment for the eye and it should clear right up.
There is no need for speacial lightiing but there is a need for a humid hide to aid in shedding. Basicly a tupperwhere container with moss or even paper towel in it, That needs to be misted every other day or so. They need a little humidity so the shed come off easily.
