my 4 month old res wont bask. Is this normal? or should I force em? thanks

you will only add to his fear. Baby turtles by nature
stay out of harms way. Basking opens them up to predators.
I am willing to bet he is basking when you are not looking.
As he grows he will get more comfortable and you will be
able to move around his enclosure without him diving off
the basking area.

My baby Painted turtle never basks in front of me but
I often catch him during the day. He of course acts
like someone is going to eat him because he dashes off
as soon as he sees me.

What is your basking temperature? If your water is warmer than your basking area then he will not bask. Water should be around 72 -75 degrees and around 85-90 for basking area.

If this is the case it may be as Linda mentioned. He may be basking when no one is watching him.

If their water and basking area are the same they generally
will not bask. I agree on the temps for the water
and the basking area.

My hatchling is set up this way and he basks daily(when I am
not looking of course).
