Can someone PLEASE answer my B.C.C. question? WHEN DO MALE B.C.C. REACH SEXUALL MATURITY?

biggworm Dec 27, 2005 01:07 AM

I am posting this for the THIRD time now.I was wondering when male B.C.C. USUALLY REACH SEXUAL MATURITY.The one answer that I did get was "WHEN HE PRODUCES SPERM PLUGS" That answer was so obvious it hurt.Every body knows that. That's like saying "YOU FEED A BOA WHEN HE'S HUNGRY."
I have searched ALL kinds of literature and have not found the answer, that is why I am asking. It's obviouse I have no experience in the subject. That's why I am asking this forum.
I am also asking because normally B.C.C. mature much latter than B.C.I. I was wondering if this applies to male surinams. My boa is exactly 18 months old andI have seen no signs of sperm plugs.I DON'T HAVE ANY PLANS ON BREEDING HIM THIS SEASON.I think I missed it.I'M JUST ASKING FOR FUTURE REFRENCES and because I'm just curiouse. Thanks again Ash Lopez

as early as 18 months of age. That is the youngest that I have seen one prove out. But, many will not show interest at that age, it depends on the individual animal. Others will breed and but not produce viable sperm causing the female to slug out, it is tuff to say and depends on the individual animal...

Thank you so much.THAT'S THE ANSWER I WAS LOOKING FOR.So they can be sexually mature at 18 months.Next year he will be 2 1/2 yrs old and my chances of him successfully mating would be greater. At least I know now that now and I can get him ready for next season.I thought that male B.C.C. had to be at least 3 yers old before they where physically and psycologically ready to mate. SWEET !!! Thanks again.I knew a TRUE B.C.C. FAN would come to the rescue. AWESOME !!!I LOVE THIS HOBBY !Thanks to Frank for selling me that boy. Ash Lopez

Here's two of his future girlfriends.I'm not sure who it's gonna be.

around 2 years and 6ft is good for males.

I know you are just trying to help out, but there is no way a BCC should be 6ft at 2 years old...

I shoot for that size around 3 1/2-4 years, powerfeeding kills....

I have had multiple male BCC perfectly healthy at less than 4ft even at 3 years of age. Anyone with a BCC male that big at that age is really pushing it, has an exceptional one that errs on the very big side, or might not dealing with pure BCC.

The general consensus I have gotten from those I know who are routinely successful is that the male should be a minimum of 3 yrs old and the female should be 5.
Of course, someone is always going to tell you about an exception, but these are general rules of thumb I have gotten from people w/much more experience than I.

Realize that if the female slugs out, you will have to give her one season off after that and you will be waiting a heck of a long time to breed that pair. Also, breeding in and of itself can be risky business with cooling, delivery and all. I would not risk my animals for unlikely prospects.

Also, if you get nothing or bad results, you’ve thrown in another variable whose contribution you cannot really measure or ascertain: maturity. Breeding BCC seems to be challenging enough for most; I would not introduce any more variables. I would make sure they are 100% so I am learning to get them to breed and am likely to do so, while also actually learning something about seasonality, not guessing about and hoping for maturity.

Good luck!

Matthew
