bigpapa02 Dec 27, 2005 01:08 AM

I am looking into getting a monitor. i am short on room so im not looking for anything to big. i was looking at savanna's a b&w tegu's but i dont know the max length of them or the min. room an adult would need. what would be some things i would need to know before getting one of these monitors. is ther any other small or medium sized monitors out there that aren't extremely pricey. thanks for all replys.

Well, If your not looking for anything too large, try an ackie of timor monitor. you could probably find a yellow ackie or timor for around $100 plus range.

I have a pair of nice yellow ackies. They are great little lizards, mine are around 16 inches. They may be a bit pricey to buy compared to other larger varanids, but in the long run you will be happy. You can find yellow ackies for about 100-125 if you look around. This may seem a bit much considering savs are at 30.00 or so, but overall, the price to feed the animal will be a lot cheaper than say feeding a sav or any other larger monitor. They need a 4x2x2 min, which isnt that hard to build/buy. Do yourself a favor and Read, Read, Read. Its all on the web. You can't really understand what any monitor is like without owning one, so I would def. suggest an ackie for a first monitor. Good Luck!

I do not know the size limits you have for an enclosure. Ackies are highly recomended but if you want something larger that is easy going, I would suggest checking into Dumerils monitors. There are some baby captive bred ones in the classifieds. I have a pair of Dumerils that are very easy going. The Arentine B&W tegu may be a good choice if you have a lot of room.

i think the Ackies are the best choice for a pet monitor. they are captive bred, stay a manageable size, and are (monitor wise) easy to care for.

any intial cost outlay is going to be way offset in the long run.

check out more Ackie and monitor info at our site, in the caresheet and FAQ sections : )

ive looked into the ackies but they are very pricy and hard for me to find. is there anyone that is selling them and maybe a a lower cost. im not really looking for a large group, i was thinking like one male or maybe a pair. the thing is if i get a pair i would need to worry about bredding and i really am not looking to get into breeding. so noone really recommends savannas? any more help for a beginner and the stuff needed to become a perfect host for a monitor would be greatfully appreciated. if anyone is selling ackies or savannas or any smaller monitors email me at justaddwater797@aol.com thanks for the replys im learning alot.

no one enthusiastically recommends a Savannah for a starter monitor, that's often true, read more about that below. there are better choices to be made.

a captive bred monitor is going to be your best choice, and captive bred monitors are more expensive than wild caughts, period. but they are a better choice.

comparing a year's cost of Savs vs. Ackies is not going to yield much monetary difference in favor of the Sav. the only thing cheaper about a Sav is the intitial animal cost. if you get one of the tens of thousands of imports, you are wise to have an initial vet visit, and that is likely to offset the cost right there.

when you factor in caging and care, for what basically is a large monitor (Sav) it becomes significantly more expensive.

if $100 to $200 is too much for a monitor, i would say consider something else, as monitors are not cheap to properly care for, and you will have money crunch problems in the long run.

if you are interested in monitors for the experience, you will not have a better experience than you will with some Ackies.

save your money, and make the right purchase for the long haul.
