Question for breeders of BRB

DavidKendrick Dec 27, 2005 03:43 PM

I have a question for BRB breeders, How much does color play into the choices you make for breeders? I have been playing the wall flower for a while, and finally had to ask. I was really into Rainbows about 7 years ago, and I remember back then they where BRB available that where ORANGE...I mean bright Orange...It seems as thought the trend is to produce darker more red toned BRB's, I would love to get back into them, but have yet to find that certain Orange I remember from back in the day. I was curious if you have noticed a trend to produce more red BRB's or is it just me? When I think of a BRB I think Orange, Some have told me that babies start out orange and then darken with age, Just curious, at least to me they have changed. Thanks in advance to all those who reply, I really hope to get back into them in the future...not if I can only find the perfect "Orange" speciems....LOL

When I'm choosing my breeders, I always look for extremes. High contrast between saddles and background is my current favorite look. I've seen red red animals that are extremely pretty and my first pair of rainbows that I ever owned was extremely orange. I've not had animals like them since. I don't know if I've noticed an overall trend towards darker animals. "Lamar Strain" animals show up in the classifieds quite frequently. I consider them to be really orange. That's one of the things that makes this hobby so great. A beautiful snake is a beautiful snake. I guess if I, personally, were to breed towards the "perfect" rainbow it would have blood-red background coloration with bright orange saddles and very prominent black borders. I'd be torn between fat crescents and bullseyes along the sides. Thanks for posting this. You've got me thinking.

When I read the posts in the Rainbow section, I generally get the idea that the red phase Rainbows are what is common and popular now. I know there are some that breed or keep the High Orange, I have seen a few really nice ones below posted. I was just curious what breeders thought. You bring up a interesting topic, I was most interested in Color, but markings and contrast and many other things to look at as well. Now you got me thinking...LOL. I have a good feeling I will be able to find a nice pair or two this year. I would love to get back into them, I remember they where one of my favorites. Thanks for the reply, and have a great new year.

I would have to agree with Mike, I myself prefer the high contrast animals. My problem is I like them all, I'm in the process of collecting high end breeding BRB's of all colors / patterns. Big crescents and bullseyes are my favorites.

I am a newcomer to the BRB realm and obviously new to breeding as well. I think there are outstanding specimens in all color phases, but I personally am trying to acquire a breeding group of brilliant red BRB's. They just appeal to my liking, but I think cresents and patterns are also equally important. I have trouble choosing which baby to keep and I suppose I go along the same lines as the other replies. I choose by contrast and pattern first, then by color. I am hoping that by this method I will be able to produce the markings that most appeal to me and then breed the color into them after several generations. maybe I have it all backwards....but I'm enjoying myself and learning in the process.

..I especially like orange BRBs. I have been breeding for orange color for awhile now. My babies are a little oranger each year. The best orange phase babies are often very light colored at birth and darken up over the first few months and then stay dark until they are between 12 and 18 months old. After that they get brighter and prettier orange colored each time they shed. The redder BRBs will also get more colorful after 12 to 18 months of age but some of them continue to get darker and darker red until the color becomes too dark and not as attractive. I holdback the lightest orange babies but also look for large bright crescents above the spots on the sides.
