My Pregnant Snake Is Refusing Food....

mikdundee Dec 27, 2005 10:45 PM

Hello,

We are brand new to breeding snakes so please excuse the ignorance... We have been breeding Bearded Dragons for several years and have recently gotten into breeding boas and ball pythons. One of our female boas is pregnant and has stopped eating for the past 4-5 weeks. Is this normal of pregnant boas? Should we be concerned? Are her babies going to be healthy if she is not eating?

Thank you for your help,

Kim and Michael

I'm not a Pro at breeding either but I do know that it is not uncommon for a gravid female to refuse food the entire length of gestation, from ovulation on.Hope this helps.Oh btw try offering what you might call a rediciously small meal sometimes they will take it,it will help her through.

Yeah, pretty standard fair. Some will continue to feed, but IMO should be fed smaller prey than normal and much less often, if they show interest in feeding at all. Others will simply refuse food and after they deliver....watch out! Generally a real good feeding response soon after! Hope this helps ease your mind. Take care!

Just on a sidenote, I would recommend that if she does decide to eat smaller prey, to not feed her during the last six weeks or so of gestation.

Good luck
