Keeping another reptile with a Ctenosaura Similis

Meric Dec 28, 2005 12:19 AM

Hello, I am new here. Just found this forum recently and it has helped greatly in the care of my C. Similis. I am currently building him (a 2 year old Male) a new cage as he has outgrown his 75 gallon tank. I am contructing a 6' X 3' X 4' cage that will have a 8" to 10" deep substrate for him to burrow and a couple of rock cliffs and caves for basking and hiding. My question is can you keep another lizard with a C. Similis without a problem. He has quite a temper and seems to not like people too much. I got him from some who did not care very well for him, he had MBD and was nearly dead when I got him. I had to hand feed him for 3 months before he started eating on his own. His bone structure has returned to normal with no deformities from the disease (mistreatment). All joint swelling is gone and he moves around now with no problems.

I was thinking of getting an adult Blue Tongue Skink, or Bearded Dragon, or even a desert tortise to also put in the cage. Even another Ctenosaura would be nice. Or do you think given his past he should be kept alone?

Thanks for any advice.

Thats a no. Dont put ANY of the mentioned animals in there with him. Mixing species is a bad idea in general as pathogens can be passed from one to the other. I suppose another ctenosaur of the opposite sex might be ok but I defer to the others on the list that have more experience with ctenos.

Just curious...is Meric your first of last name. My son's name is Merrik, and I have never come across anything close before so it struck an interest.

Wish I could be more of a help reqarding your question.

It's just a screen name I have used for years. I got it from a Roll Playing game, Bard's Tale II. One of the characters there was called Meric, it just stuck.

Oddly enough I knew a woman whose son was also named Merrick. You don't live in the St. Louis/St. Charles area by any chance.

Have friends in that area.
