If you want the sponge to retain it's good bacteria, clean it in warm (tank temp) dechlorinated water.

I'm using a Magnum 350 for my 55 gallon tank. I've had 2 different Fluval canisters in the past, so far this Magnum is the best I've ever used.
People who have them have told me that the Eheim(check the spelling)brand canister is the most wonderful filter they've ever used for turtles but it's also the most expensive I've found so I've never tried one.
I'd like to one day if my Magnum ever fails me.
