Color development in our Dragon,

Mrez Dec 28, 2005 10:07 AM

Hey All, First time poster on this board. Back in september or october my Girlfriend bought a bearded dragon from a show. The gentlemen we bought him from first told us that he was A pastel orange sunrise mix then later on told us something else. While I'm not to overly concerned about the exactly lineage about this dragon I am concerned about his color. We paid a decent dollar and I want to make sure my girlfriend wasnt ripped off. When we bought this dragon he was mostly orange and peach with some dark browns on his back..but his legs and dorsal stripping were distinctively orange. Well just yesterday he went through his first shed with us and it seems like most of his peaches, oranges and pinks have faded out, to be replaced by alot of browns and greys, in fairness he still has a nice sharp contrast going for him..but I'm worried he is just gonna dull out. My girlfriend loves him regardless..but I'm a stickler for these things. Any thoughts or suggestions? I am not sure of the birth date of this dragon but judging from the guys website and his siblings it was probably in the july to august range. I don;t have any good pictures of him right now but I'll try to post some up tonight or tommrow.

Thanks all,
~Matthew

One thing to consider is the lighting. He may have been kept outdoors or under high intensity uvb , like mercurey vapor bulbs. If you take him home and put him under just a heat lamp and a store bought uvb light a lot of times the colors can dull out. Its like getting a tan then not being in the sun, you loose it. Also It depends on the bloodlines. Some dragons dull out a little bit then they start to develope more color again as they mature. Anyways good luck!

peace,
nate

Thanks for the post...we currently have him on one of those UVA UVB spots with a old flurecent bulb running along the other half of the cage...I've been wanting to get a new one for some time now.. Will keep the aging thing in mind though..thanks again.
