Mali Not Eating- Any Advice?

mycollection Jul 24, 2003 11:40 AM

Hmmm.. Maybe I am just neurotic or obsessive. Either way, I have just moved my adult mali to another enclosure and it has been about 6 days since he has eaten........ My younger uros seem to do fine and are eating quite well when they were moved (This is probably due to their young age).

However this mali has seemed to ALWAYS have strange eating issues....... does anyone have any ideas in terms of jump starting him...... should i change the food options and offer something unique?? like peas.......or just wait it out.

- thanks -

everyone is always talking how uro's eat and eat and eat...well, then i have the pickyest mali ever. I would try waxworms, dried split peas and dandelions. those are the only three foods my mali will eat when he's on his hunger strike. sometimes he wants to be handfed, other times he just nudges me out of the way. either way, those three items, he usually perks up for.

he's probably really traumatized from the move. since he's an adult, i'm kinda sure he'll eat when he's ready. Although, i don't really know how long is too long for an adult not to eat. maybe the others can help you out better with that.

good luck!

my first hunch is that he is going through the stress of being moved. So he's most likely acclimating once again. I would just try to keep offering all sorts of veggies. Dandilions seem to really bring them out, peas, carrots, green beans, all the leafy stuff, just keep a variety going.

A uro can go up to a couple weeks without eating. But I would suggest if it becomes too long of a period, to do some soaks in order to maintain his hydration.

Worse case, you can force feed with a syringe and baby foods to keep him nourished (but only if he starts losing alot of weight or becomes lethargic).

Give him a few more days and see how it goes.
good luck!
