Sunshine's about to lay eggs...lele are you there?

mchiara Dec 28, 2005 06:14 PM

Just got home and saw several holes in the sand and in one I saw just the tip of her tail. Looks like this hole is the deepest she made.
We are going to be in religious silence for the rest of the evening...since Sunshine's cage is in the living room..!!

Hopefully everything goes well and she keeps this hole... if she does, how long will it take from now?

Thanks,

Chiara

Actually I just popped by and saw your post! You haven't been on the forums that long, so I do not think your knew Luna (lost her in July), but simply put, I get very excited about first time gravid veiled's and their first time gravid keepers (OK, her gravid, not you! lol!!) We can chat about Luna later....

Down in the hole is such a good thing My personal recommendation is to cover her cage completely and keep her as dark and quiet as you can. I could never help myself in the middle of the night to peek in and see that she was either turned around (laying) or covering (done). With Luna, from digging to laying to back in the branches was 10 or more hours. I never did find out if this is typical all I can say is that it seemed like forever but was always so glad to see her back in her branches. She was newver bred and always laid b/t 37-42(!) eggs everytime - it took a lot out of her.

I'll stop back later to check on her/your(!) progress.

does the sand seem to be holding its shape? Not that you can do anything now, but if it seems crumbly, just check ocassionally

Looks like it is holding, I was concerned about that too. I have the mister going on every few hours for 2 minutes each time...it doesn't really get on her spot, but I don't know if repositioning the nozzle and getting the mist on her hole it might bother her, just having the mist on her hole.....
I tuned off the spot light, even if it was going to turn off in half an hour. How dark do you mean? Is the complete dark OK? DOes she need to see?

Thanks, Chiara

I wouldn't worry about the mister; you don't want her, or the soil, to get wet. As for covering it is not as much for the light as for her privacy/disturbance - You are an attentive mom so I am sure all is fine.

OK, one more silly question: Should I leave a light on, (I was thinking outside the cage)? since at night she's usually in the dark, but I don't knwo what she needs now: light or dark, should she be able to see?

it took my female about 10 hours to finish the whole shabang. Mine did it during the day time so i won't be much help about adding light for night time laying. But ive heard from others that it should be done.

she doesn't need to see anything, it is all very "mechanical." I would not leave on a light that she would not normally be exposed to. Believe me, I DO understand your anxiety! I expect that we will see a post by morning that she is all done. I always found it amazing how little sand she had on her body. Maybe she licked herself clean in the dark! (just kidding

ambient light can disrupt sleep, but since she is covered and has been sleeping fine up until now all will be OK.

Out of town on Thursday but will check back for progress reports
