Shell E really freaked me out

PHRatz Dec 28, 2005 07:47 PM

Yesterday evening at around 6 PM Shell E had finished her bath. She'd voided during the bath, then dried off & ate a full meal.
I check all the animals here several times a day, I can see it if behavior changes.
With the box turtles we do the same ritual daily. They come out daily for a soak, one at a time then they exercise. I saw absolutely no change in her behavior.
So I'm in the kitchen when I turn & look at Shell E in the dining room, she's standing there next to an EGG! Charity wasn't out yet, Janie has been having her exercise time in another room away from the other girls so I know it came from Shell E.

I couldn't believe it, she's never laid an egg since she's been here which I think without looking it up is 5 & 1/2 years... this was a first. I almost think it freaked her out as much as it did me.
I'm beginning to think this is a one & only egg, I left her out for a couple of hours longer, I've fixed her a place for more, she hasn't been digging, no pacing, no change in her behavior at all & no more eggs.
The one egg cratered right away, I'm sure it wasn't fertile.
So now I'm on Shell E watch, gotta watch for signs of dystocia but I think that won't happen. She's been behaving in a totally normal way today.
It's been a weird 24 hours around here.

I feel alot better about Shell E this morning. She's laid 2 mores eggs less to worry about now.
She broke them both but she got them out of herself without a problem & that's what I care about most, that she's ok.

Wow, well, at least she is laying them and they are not stuck. Its odd she would be laying them this time of year, but I guess because she is indoors her body isn't on the same schedule as the wild ones.
