Mites? Ticks??? What ARE these?

Cl0wn Dec 28, 2005 08:45 PM

Sorry for the question marks but tonight I was changing my corn snakes waterbowl and noticed a little brownishblackish thing crawling up the glas. I never see bugs in his tank so i looked at it and it looked like it had 2 antenae or something and looked nothing like an ant but rather a grumpy bug. i think i killed it but i was worried so i started to snoop more around in the corns tank and looked at some poo but next to the poo I saw ANOTHER BUG! I dont know if it was another bug or if it was the one I thought I killed though. The pictures are VERY bad I know but can you make out what they might be? I checked my corn and even opened his mouth but he was clean. I still found it strange that that bug was near his poo.I never have had mites and only get snakes from respectable breeders.

it is neither mites or ticks...looks like a random bug wondered into your cage. Looks almost like what we used to call stink bugs when I was a kid. Did it smell bad when you killed it?

I was thinking it was a stink bus as well. Probably got attracted by the lights

It looks like a stink bug (Euschistus ssp.)

Maybe a silverfish? Seems a little dark to be one but you never know. Especially since it is such a bad quality pic.

Remember, mites are arachnids. They have four pairs of legs. What you have is an insect, three pairs of legs. Also, it is too large to be a snake mite. I use a microscope to look at mites and other things, and often they are barely visible, even under pretty high power

i don't think mites or ticks either. silverfish i think is more slender milliped type. looks like stink bug or some type of small beetle to me. i'm no bug expert though.

Yeah it's definitely not a silverfish; I used to feed them to my toads and tree frogs when I was but a wee lass. ^_^ Silverfish are generally silver/gray in color and slender, with 2 long antennae at the head end and 3 at the tail end. They are pretty fast lil buggers too!

I used to have fun creeping out my mother with them >:D I'm evil I know! 8p

Deffinitely not a snake mite or tick. How big was it? Half inch long? smaller? I don't think it's a stink bug, they tend to have much more triangular shells, almost shield shaped. Also they tend to be closer to half an inch in length, as adults (though it could be a adelescent which does look alot like the adult). It looks like some kind of small weevil to me, which are more narrow in body than stink bugs but don't have a really strong odor if squished. A less blurry picture would make it easier to tell exactly what kind of bug it is.

On the good side, it isn't a snake/reptile or rodent pest, so your animals are all fine. The fact you found it near poop made me think it was some kind of carrion beetle, but it doesn't seem to have the right body shape for that nor the faded coloration typically located behind the neck segment.
