Sneezing

wyocuttergirl Dec 28, 2005 09:32 PM

Hi! I'm a total herp newbie. My sister (make that single, childless sister) gave my boys (ages 6 and 3) a collared female for Christmas. She seems to be doing well and I have a 60G tank (that came with Lizzie, oh my children are so creative) and she's shedding and doing well. My question is when and why do they sneeze. She started sneezing and has done it a couple of times most every time I take her out of her tank. Any advice or info?

and the kids, LOL Anyway congratulations on the new little girl. They are sweet pets if handled regularly.

The sneezing can be normal as most lizards will sneeze to expell excess salt from their bodies. With some of my lizards especially the bigger ones You will actually see the white spots of salt all over the glass sides of the tank.

Now if you were to notice any discharge from eyes, or nose or any noises, when she was breathing (poping sound) or any signs of illness, then I would say respiratory infection and call your Vet for antibiotics.

But since shes eating well and doing well, I would say watch her incase, but it may just be the expelling of the excess salts. Let us know how shes doing

Again Glad to have you with us, GREAT bunch here, the people are pretty NEAT too, hehehehee

Any questions give us a holler someone will be more than happy to anwser!

Thanks!! She seems great and it was just the sneezing I didn't know about. But now another question. How do I find a Vet for a lizard? I have a horse vet and a dog vet, but I don't know of any herpatologists in my area. Any suggestions?

Deb, here is a link that provides Vets from each state, that deal with reptiles. Just scroll down and look at the list.

Just as I thought. None in my State. Wyoming. I love it here, but we are a tiny bit isolated. I'll go back and check Montana. I live near Yellowstone Park. Just the place for a dessert lizard, eh?

Thanks for all the help!

I noticed that my lizards have white powdery stuff around there nose, I didn't realize it was salt.
