My crestie has been burrowing under the bedding...

koashmar Dec 28, 2005 11:41 PM

...and I saw a post below with a picture saying the crestie that had burried all but her head was laying eggs.

I have a female crestie by herself - could she be laying eggs (obviously not fertile?) or is this behavior indicative of something else? She has also been staying put on the glass hoovering just over the spot I saw her burrying herself. Do cresties "guard" their eggs?

has she always been housed by herself? cresteds can retain sperm for over 6 months so if she's ever been with a male and eggs are found they could be viable. infertile eggs will usually be laid on the surface, but not always.
sometimes cresteds just bury themselves for whatever reason, male or female. i think most of the time it is due to moisture/humidity reasons.

She's been by herself since she was just a little squirt. Thanks for the reply.

I wasn't sure if maybe they were like birds in that they could lay eggs at any point in time, they just wouldn't be fertile.

only way to be sure is to dig about the bottom of the cage to see if you do find eggs. I would remove her thuogh, so as to prevent unnecessary stress. After searching for eggs, pat down the substrate again and put her back in.
