Fruit Fly Culture Recipe(s) Needed

vegasbilly Dec 28, 2005 11:43 PM

Hey All! Most of my cultures dried up. Dang Nevada aridity gets me again! I still have alot of adults but need to restart some cultures to sustain my rapidly growing "collection" of neonate Chams. The comercial stuff works great but I'm in a bind! I'm hoping Tyler shares his recipe with me as I've offered to trade him adult flies for his recipe but I thought it would be cool to compare and contrast.

Try equal parts of instant mashed potatoes and water, with just a pinch of dry yeast on the top.
Add a few adult fruit flies and let the production begin!

Thanks! What about mold? Seems like I read something about "mold inhibitors" in the commercial culture mediums. Any suggestions?

here are a couple recipe sites that might help you out, too.
www.amphibiancare.com/frogs/articles/fruitflies.html
www.anapsid.org/fruitfly.html

When I was using a lot of them I ordered the FF Culture Kit from from Timberline. Only had to buy a packet of yeast at market (very cheap). It lasted a long time. I am sure their are other sites that sell it this way.

have fun!

I don't use any mold inhibitors in this recipe. I think the whole purpose of adding yeast is to begin the break down of the insta potatoes.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but don't FF's eat molding fruit? I think they need a SMALL bit of something to break down the fruit. Mebbe it's the little bit of mold?
At any rate, I don't have issues with mold with this recipe. It goes a bit brown in the first few days, but that's only until the FF maggots start to grow. Then it just sorta stabilizes. Kinda seems to be just on the verge of all going bad for a few good weeks.
