hybernation

patrickcrowley Dec 29, 2005 12:15 PM

I was planning on putting my two collard lizards down for hybernation around January 15th however I think they may have done it on their own this week. They did slow down eating but I'm not sure if their bowels are totally clean.

If they are out for the sleep, how long can I keep them this way?

Thank you.

Patrick

Hi

Brumation does sometimes start on its own. Stop feeding the lizards completely, making sure there are no "hidden" crickets, mealworms or superworms in their enclosure. After five days, turn off their lights, and wait an additional 48 hours.

Then, you will need to place them in actual brumation. For posts on how to brumate, do a search on brumation in the forum and you'll probably come up with past posts that offer different suggestions and schemes to provide the optimum brumation conditions and length.

If there are still questions that you cannot find answers for, post again, and we'll try to assist.

Kit gave you pretty much the info you needed but here is a link if you need to read more on brumation, scroll down to Breeding, I believe brumation is explained there.
