color combinations

Now that I've given my dad his vivarium, he's looking into frogs. He brought up a concern. Seeing as the vivarium is in his waiting room, and it's point is to distract people while they're waiting, he'd like to have some variety in it. For anyone who missed my last post about it, the vivarium is a 20 high. There are pictures of it down below, in the thread 'Finished dart frog vivarium'

Are there any frogs that we could keep multiple colors together? One person told me that tincs and azureus can be kept together. But if there are no species that can be kept together, could we keep different colors of the same species together? Like, blue, and blue-green, and green auratus, or maybe an of the color phases of mantellas?

If we did combine species, would hybridization occur? We both want to breed whatever frogs we put in there, and if hybrids will occur, or if it will prevent breeding, it'd be hard to talk me into combining species.

Thanks in advance,
Ronnie Nocera

Mixing is normally not a good idea, and hybridization is also a concern. Your best bet is to just get one species and something that can be kept in groups. Luecs are a nice choice.

Also many of the common issues can be found my searching the forms.

Yes they will hybridize and even interbreeding different color morphs from different localities is a problem but if you want a bunch of different colors then you don't have to look any further than tincts. This species comes in a variety of colors and patterns and are usually out and about for easy viewing.

Check out Black Jungle's page for a bunch of good pictures of the different locality patterns.

If you just pull and discard the eggs, then you don't have to worry about the hybridization issues.
