New snake needs help - George has gotten away

newsnake Dec 29, 2005 02:02 PM

George has escaped. He was in my daughter's pocket and now she can't find him. She says she overturned the couch she was laying on, pulled the cushions out of both couch and love seat, looked in the Christmas tree, under the tree skirt, and no George. I suggesed she plug in a heat pad and cover it with a towel because being in our basement, he is bound to be cold and would seek out warmth.

Any other suggestions? She is afraid he has gotten outside somehow but both doors going outside have seals under them so I don't think he could have gotten out.

Yes that heating pad idea might work but I would use a big piece of cardboard so it can get under easier. You probably have a basement utility room, this is were it is likely to go. Keep looking, then look some more, it's there somewhere! My friends wife found one of their snakes in the washing machine, it was missing for like six months! I don't even want to know how many washes it went threw but it's still doing O.K.!
Good Luck

I went home a little while ago and still no George. My daughter is really upset. We have turned the couch upside down on top of heating pad to hopefully draw him out if he is still down in there somewhere.

Our utility room is also our Christmas/junk room so if he had time to get in there with all those boxes it may be a long time before we see him again. The area around the furnace is cleaned out and we have looked around there pretty good but he is so small still, he will be hard to find anywhere. It is very cool down there so we are hoping the heating pad will draw him out. I am worried about him getting hurt with him being so small he could be eaten by a big spider.

Please pray our guardian angels will find him and bring him to her.

Well there's a good chance it might make it back out to the "WILD". You can find another "George" in the classifieds!

I hope not. That was a lot of money going out the door with him for five days!

What kind of milksnake was it anyways?

He will turn up, you could lay down flour on the floor near doors and openings and in the area you lost him and if hes around you will see his tracks.

It is a Pueblan.

The pattern on our carpet is too busy to see tracks. I am thinking he is in the couch somewhere. He is so small he could be anywhere. I am hoping he hurries and comes out for my daughter's sake. She is really upset.

Hope she turns up for you, most likely she will show up.

Maybe this will help:

I would suggest setting up a snake trap. It is pretty simple. Use an appropriate size plastic soda bottle, for a small snake use a 16-20 oz bottle, for a larger snake use a 2 litre bottle. Cut the top off the bottle right where it is the largest. Then insert the top of the bottle backwards into the bottom of the bottle. What you are doing is making a fancy funnel type trap. Put the trap that you have baited with a frozen/thawed mouse of the appropriate size in the house where you think they may be on the floor. You can put one of those heat pads under it. Leave it overnight. In the morning, hopefully you will come out to a sleeping snake in the bottle.

You might want to make a few of these to use in several rooms. Don't forget the hallway and bathrooms.

The traps workpretty good, but I would suggest setting up about two or three if you can. This ups the odds in your favor. Place them in warm dark places near where he got loose. If there are any small holes (ie. vents, gaps in the base boards, etc.) coverthem so he can't get in there. Searchevery dark warm placethat you can think of. These are the places that the snake will feel most secure. Ihave found mine in all sorts of odd places. I dedn't even realize that I had one loose until she slithered from behind the bathroom door. I think she liked the spot until I came in and turned on the light. Whatever you do, be patient. And don'tgetto grabby if you spot him. Take your time and try to cut off all escape routs before you try and get him. I hope your hunt is sucessfull. Ihad to retrieve one of my nice(and expensive) Hondurans from under thecarpet in my van. It took some dissassembly and about 2 hours but we got her. Hope you find him soon.

Everyone here has given good advice but dont be suprised if you dont find it than months later you see it slithering down your living room .
I had ringmeck snake escape . It was my first and last snake escape happen 3 yrs ago and 3 months later I saw it in the middle of the night slithering down the stairs going into the basement. It looked the same a tad skinnier but ok.
It ate right away and drank when I put him in his tank . I would have never thought a snake could go missing so long and live. I searched high and low looking for it when I noticed he had escaped .
