Fecal Exam

Burmaboy Dec 29, 2005 05:27 PM

How long is the stool smaple viable for? If my burms, or any snake for that matter shed, and defecate in the am, and I cant get the stool to the vet till the next day, is it still viable?
I breed dogs, and I only use fresh samples for them.
Is day old poop still ok to do , I'm guessing a float test is done?

Yep. Next day should be fine. Plastic bag the sample. Pretty much the same as canines...but ID'ing the ova can be fun and then, deciding yes or no to treatment...good luck

If you find the stool shortly after it'd been dropped, put it in a baggie and pop it into the fridge till you go to the vets.

This should all be fine for ova, however the direct smear which is helpfull in detecting motile parasites, giardia, coccidia, protozoa ect is screwed if not done super fresh.
Therefore, if regular periodic fecals, 12hrs in the fridge should be okay, don't let it dry out. If the animal is sick, in quarantine, or otherwise in question, a fresh, less than 1hr old, non-refridgerated sample is the best.
