Question about preventing eggs? Lele?

Melisondra Dec 29, 2005 11:01 PM

Hey all! Just lurking around on the forums as well lately, but home for break right now. Im curious though about my one veiled. (back story for those who dont know) I rescued her from a petstore with severe MBD and other probs, broken leg or hip socket that healed weird, etc. She's recovered well enough, but will always be tiny. Shes about 3-4 inches snout to vent, tops.

She is about a year old, and on a smaller controlled diet. But is there any other way to really make sure no eggs formed? With her being so small and deformed, i really dont think she would, but I dont want to take the chance if I can. I dont think she is big enough to carry developed eggs, let alone pass one.

Anyway any ideas would be greatly appreciated! Happy New Years all!

A big thing for not creating eggs (so long as they arent genetically redisposed to it) has alot to do with husbandry and feeding. Make sure not to over feed as some have said that this can cause large clutchs and IF She does ever create eggs you CERTAINLY dont want it to be a large clutch

Hey Erin - you're not done with school yet??? (jk)

I am glad to hear your little girl is doing so well. Got pics?

As you know the diet seems to be a real key re: egg development. Had Luna lived I had pretty much made the decision (with the help of my vet and the folks here) that I would mate her (provided I could find a healthy male) and just not keep the eggs. This was in the hopes that it would adjust her hormones so she would not continue to develop eggs. It would have been an experiment of sorts, and of course, risky but I think it would have been worth it to try - considering the alternative. Obviously she would still have had to carry and lay the eggs which does not sound like an option for your girl.

B/c she had such a rough beginning maybe her reproductive system is underdeveloped and she may not deveop eggs at all. There is always the option of getting her "fixed" but, as you know all too well, the risks there - and again, she may be too small to survive it. Gee, I've just been a really big help here, huh? lol!!

I did begin to look into brumation just to try and slow her down during the winter months. I could not find much info, but if you lower her temps and light cycle a bit it may shut down her body enough. kinyonga said that some of her female veilds never devoloped a single infertile clutch. She would definitely be someone to ask and maybe bounce your feeding regimen off her, too.

Well, on that note - Happy New Year
