washed sand as a substrate?

snapjacks Dec 30, 2005 02:55 AM

Right now the floor in my toads' house is all coconut bark shavings.

I'm wondering if they'd like one half of it to be sand. Is "Play Sand" safe for a bufo toad? ... It's washed sand that wallmart sells in big bags, suitable for sandboxes and planters.

Don't use it.

Sand does not have the properties needed for the toad to be able to burrow like soil does, and it does not hold humidity well enough. You also run a greater risk of impaction by using sand than by using coconut or soil. Most toads do not naturally live on sand. Coconut chunks are fine, but there should be a area of fairly deep, moist soil for burrowing.

By greater risk of impaction, do you mean that they would swallow some sand and cause harm whereas some occasional consumed coconut won't harm them?

As far as humidity, I was told to try and keep these toads' enclosure at a low 10-20% humidity.
