Shedding problems-any ideas?

josieradley Dec 30, 2005 12:03 PM

I've got a two year old male Dumeril's. He eats brilliantly, is observed drinking fairly often, and is very tame. I keep him in a 6ftX2.5ftX3ft vivarium, with plenty of hides, a climbing branch, fresh water etc etc. Daytime temperatures range from 75 degrees at the cool end to 85 degrees at the hot end, with a basking spot of 90 degrees. The temperatures are allowed to drop by about 5 degrees at night.I've had him 8 months, in which time he has shed six times. My problem is that only one of them has been a 'good' shed. Others have been bitty, or have required soaking and manual removal. I've tried misting his cage, and daily soaking after the opaqueness has cleared up. I've even tried soaking from when he goes blue, and also leaving him totally alone during the entire shed cycle-all to no avail-I can't seem to get it right! Does anybody have any ideas on how I can help him to shed better? Thanks in advance for any replies.

P.S I am certain that he doesn't have mites or anything like that

My Dumerils always has perfect sheds, but he's in a 4 foot
Vision. It's much easier to raise the humidity and keep it high
in there.

You can soak him in very warm water, right when he begins
shedding. The skin will come right off.

Mine has a big cave made out of clay. I soak the cave in hot
water to raise the cages humidity. He's got a large dog water
dish that I fill with Hot water at least daily when he's in shed
to raise the humidity as well. You're probably already doing those things...tc
