Odd water dragon behavior?

Mothi Dec 30, 2005 02:44 PM

So far I have seen him do this about 5 times now. It can't be just random behaviors showing because he is repeatedly doing this...

He will walk up to his water dish and then dive right in. The water is high enough to cover his back but he can hold his head high out of the water. He would suddenly dunk his head in the water and then start swaying his head back and forth under the water... Like he is taking a dunk. He would stop, then repeat this a few times. He reminds me of a bird who takes a bath in a shallow pool of water. What in the heck is he up to? His water dish is a little longer than his full length with tail, but not as wide as his full body length with tail. The water, like I mentioned is not that keep... just enough to cover his back. He seems to enjoy on occasions jumping into his water with just his head up... then doing his wierd swimming??? It seems he drinks some water when he gets out too... and sometimes when he gets out on the ledge of his dish after his bath, he jumps right back in and does this again... and again... Any insight?

Maybe he just likes it. OR he's shedding and could be trying to get skin off his head? I don't think it's anything bad though.

Hi, my girl does the same thing. I have seen her do it when she is trying to get shedding skin off her head, but she will also do it while she isn't shedding. She has a deeper and larger water tub than the one you described you have, so I don't think that has anything to do with it. It looks strange and sometimes humorous because like you said she looks like a bird bathing. She is quite happy and active and her last stool sample came back negative so I don't think it is a health issue. I have noticed also that she will do this after she has a big meal, perhaps the water helps move things along down to her stomach.
Best,
Becky

Thanks for the response guys.

I don't think he is in shed.. doesn't look like it. But the last time he did this behavior was after a meal. Maybe within 30 mins of one.

And yes, it is very comical to watch...
