silkworms to big????

taralynn_hughes Jul 24, 2003 01:30 PM

Roan is about 7 inches long in body, and about a foot and a half in total. He's about 6 or seven monthes old. We got a dozen silworms in with our cricket shipment, and 'm not sure if he can eat them. They are huge, well in conparison to the mealworms. they are about an inch and a half long....is that to big for poor roan. They are all doing the 'stand up' thing in the container, does that mean they are going to shed. I think I read that a few days ago.
anyway, help would be appriated

I don't think it should be a problem. Chameleons can eat things that are pretty big in comparison to their size. I saw a show on the Discovery Channel about mantids a while back, and they showed a chameleon catch and eat a mantis that was probably three or four times bigger than it could fit in its mouth at once, so an inch and a half silk worm should be no problem.

I have a female jackson that is about 5", and she eats silkworms all the time, as soon as I put them in she eats them. Some times they can be hal her body length and she doesnt care.

She'll down 'em just fine. No worries. Mine have been eating silkworms of various sizes since they were three months old. Since they are soft with no real exoskeleton, they masticate rather easily and also easily digestible. It's kind of like them eating a big piece of pasta!

That standing thing the silkies do is actually a defense mechanism. No food, no movement. It actually works, too. Sometimes I have to jostle the silkies a bit to move around so my chams can see them.

they are soft bodied and much easier to eat than crickets with thier barbs or meal worms with hard exo-skeletons my chameleons love them and can't eat enough.
