Breeding Question

shinysnakeskin Dec 30, 2005 06:09 PM

i woke up today around 2:30ish... and checked on the pair. Castner is off of her and she is still in the same corner as lastnight. i held myself back from peeking at them, and let the two be. how do i know if they did anything? i read that females will swell up after they breed. correct me if im wrong. but if im right, i guess that will tell me if they actually bred...
right now it is 6:54pm, and i just checked on them again, and Castner is ontop of her but their tails arent together.
any ideas?
thank you!

Well hopefully last night he found his way and they got a little bit of breeding going on - I had a first time breeder this year that only went a couple of hours - so naturally I emailed all my special people (you know who you are) and check to see if this was normal, ok, was there anything I needed to be worried about, etc. - I kept them together for a few days they bred off and on and then I pulled him out and fed and rested him and put him back in a few days later and they hooked back up. This seems to be their pattern instead of hooking up for a day or two like my others they hook up several times during the course of the pairing.

Anyway - give them a couple of days - see what happens - pull him out and feed (if they are still eating) and rest them then put them back in together - keep it up until she ovulates and keep your fingers crossed.

So thats the $50 female that the unscrupulous guy told you was a male?!?! LOL - ya gotta love it - make sure if she lays you send him a picture.

Best of luck with them!

Tosha's right. It seems to stimulate them more if they are seperated for about a week between the times they hook up. Personally, I just leave mine together and start the warm up again about the end of Feb. They will hook up several times in this period and I should have a clutch in May sometime .

okay. im nervious about disturbing them and ruining the moment between the two, so i think i want to leave them together for a bit long. the two keep locking up off and on, im taking that as normal. how long should i let them continue? should i just leave them together for about a week or two? when should i put the male back into his container? and then, how long after copulation does it take for the female to lay her eggs? 2 months?
thank you guys very much.

Dont worry about disturbing them once they hook up they don't much care about anything else. Leave them together for a few days - when you see they aren't hooked up - separate them for a few days try to feed them let them rest - then put them back together - I do 3 days in 3 days out unless they've eaten then I do a 4 day rest. Some people do a week in a week out - that works too. Keep putting them together until you see ovulation - sometimes one copulation will work but you should get as many in as possible to be on the safe side. She may not ovulate for several months and you want to be sure there is plenty of fresh sperm for her to use. Let them copulate until you see ovulation (could be a month or two) then from there you got 51 days give or take until the eggs are laid.

This might help:

Wow tosha great example you laid out there! I have read that information before, often times one part here, and another part there, but I am a visual learner, so that helps a ton!

Good luck with the breeding Sam!

thank you for this chart Tosha, this will help me out alot. i too am a visual learner, and the only thing that is not making sence in my head is trying to figure out and learn/understand the ova, ovulation and all those terms, im a girl i should know that right?... haha, but in my head its not clicking yet... so can someone explain it to me? like i dont really understand the female process that she has to go through before breeding, like with the ova going to the ova ducts, and follicels etc... it makes my head hurt, but iam determined to learn this and to understand this.
right now it is 8:11pm, and in a little bit iam going to seperate the two. hes not laying on her but hes laying next to her. so im going to do the 3 days in, 3 days out.
do any of you think there is a website that has a snakes anatomy? i think if i can see the ova and the ova duct and the other stuff it will help me more to understand.
thank you guys so much!!!
