Handling new king

crestygecko Dec 30, 2005 06:31 PM

hey all,

Im new to the snake world and don't know too much about handling snakes. I went with a Cal King because I heard that they have a docile personality and are simply stunning. I purchased a 3 month old that eats great, but I was told not to pick him up after setting him in his new enclosure for a couple of days. I purchased him on 12/29/05 and he said to give him about 3 days before handling him. Is this accurate?? Secondly, when I do handle him, for how long and about how many times a day??? I dont want to get biten too often or at all for that matter, anyone got some good advice???

Thanks in advance

You will get many opinions on this but in my opinion you will not "tame" a snake by handling. You will stress it out. With size comes a calmer snake. Feed it in a separate enclosure and do not handle it after feeding. Always wash your hands before handling and be bold when picking up the snake. A flat hand coming down on top of the snake gently will keep you from being bit most of the time. It is hard to describe how I do it but I have never been bit successfully by a snake this way. I have been struck at but they never get a hold of me. Anyway good luck and be patient if your snake is wild. Most calm down by 6 months or less.

P.s. watch them when they look hungry once they are in your had

biting is either Defence or feeding responce (bite now ask questions later kind of thing).remember they are an ambush predator
so handling your snake may befriend you rather than ALWAYS bite and discharge on you.
Allow food to digest a couple days b4 handling most snakes to prevent regurge. Kings Rule L8r Chris
