Might be picking up a yellowtail

Weekendherper Dec 30, 2005 06:54 PM

I've been casually looking for a yelowtail for a while now. I've read everything I could find about them, including Dean's great article in Reptiles.
Today I came across a large fresh import at my local shop. It looked nice and fat (not dehydrated) and was fairly calm but inquisitive. It's new enough that they haven't tried to feed it yet, so I don't know how long that may take, but I'm thinking I'll take my chances and try it myself. They'll knock the price down if that's the case. Does anyone have any experience good or bad with feeding WC yellowtails?

As I've never worked with a "fresh" import, I'm wondering if anyone has used panacur as a preventative step, or should I just get a culture done by my vet?

Any other advise would be greatly appreciated.

I had sent my pair of yellowtails to Canada. Turns out my hunch about the female being gravid was most likely correct. I just picked up a large yellowheaded male from Florida. I am driving down there to pick him up plus some others next week. I will be looking for a breedable female from Surinam if anyone knows of one. I try to breed for locality as much as is possable. An E mail with any leads would be appreciated.

To answer your question about imports, I keep them hot and feed them a lot. I have had good luck with wild Cribos in general but quarantine in a separate room or building is a must unless you want to risk your whole collection. I never treat for parasites unless they are eating but loosing weight.
