What else to put in my terrarium

b_e_a_r_d_i_e Dec 30, 2005 07:32 PM

Currently i have a 50 gallon terarium that will do me a bit before my beardie out grows it . i have calci sand as the substrat and a larg stick for him to perch on directly under the basking light i have a rock in the cooler part of the cage along with his water/food dish. it looks a bit bare. i was wondering if anyone had any suggestions on what else i can add. when i get my digi cam i will upload some pics onto here!

dont use calci-sand.
even if it says its digestable, it doesnt digest quick enough to pass through. and even if you dont feed your baby on the sand itself. beardies tend to be tongue tasters and may ingest some on his own.

oh, yeah. fake plants are great. cause your beardie cant eat them and get hurt, and if you want live plants that wont hurt him, try wheat grass. another thing mine likes is the lizard hammock. its pretty cool. and he also likes to hang upsidedown from the fake plants that are attached to the glass.
I also have some long flat soap stone pieces and some petrfied wood so that he has a shady spot in the cool and in the warm end of the enclosure.
most often your light will heat up the rocks and voila, safe and easy heat rock that wont harm him. 9some beardies and lizards get burns from heat rocks.
you could also get some styrofoam like the packing stuff, thats a solid block and carve it so it fits in a corner and make a cave for him painting it with non toxic paint. just be careful not to put it under the heat lamp as it will melt. it looks pretty cool too.
i took a block from inside a TV box and covered it in like grout cement. it looks like a real rock.!

first of all you shouldn't have listened to who ever said to use the calcisand. It's not good at all to use...causes impactation and worst of all is way too expensive.

the best sand to use....if you are going to use sand....is the play sand they sell at walmart (50lbs/$3). basically you want washed and sifted playsand. pet store employee's won't tell you this because they like to sell you a single pound bag for $10 just because there is a picture of a lizard on the bag.

I, and many others here, use non-stick shelf liner. That way there is no worry for impactation at all.

As far as cage accessories go...get what ever you think looks good. if you can afford it, just buy at a pet store. go for a walk in the woods and pick out some sticks or rocks. if you have a stream around you find some slate/shale/sand stone that is flat and you can stack to make a cave.
