Aquaflame question

Bob Dec 30, 2005 08:36 PM

I have seen the Oklahoma Dept of wildlife website and they have a collard that is the most awesome I have ever seen, it has an orange head with deper orange almost red looking flames on the dewlap and underside of head, he defintaley fits the description of aquaflame to the tee the body is turquise blue not green. Some of the aquaflames I see posted here look like yellow heads with some yellow on the back, nice but nowhere near the one I seen on that website. Do the aquaflames change color depending on how warm they are? Do any of yours fit the description of the one on the Oklahoma site? Can you give me any referances to where or who I could aquire such an awesome male aquaflame?
Thanks Bob

I can't help you with your questions, but I did want to thank you for posting the link to that picture. He is one very colorful, handsome fellow.

I am not the most experienced person on the forum, but here is what I have heard in response to your question...

Captive collared lizards tend to be less deeply colored than those in the wild. There are several theories as to why this might be true:

nutrition - the prey eaten by the wild lizards are more diverse in species and nutrition, and are gut-loaded with more plant material of a diverse nature

light - natural sunlight is copied by our reptisun bulbs, but still not quite the same. UVB levels and other types of wavelengths are somewhat different with true sunlight. (If this were the only factor, then an outdoor cage should bring more color)

genetics - CB lizards are not "selected" by nature. We work to make them ALL survive, and the male who gets to breed is the one that we put in the enclosure with the female. In nature, only the quick, only the visually acute, only the intelligent, get to survive, and then, the female may prefer the brightest male as her chosen mate. (???)
