Mandarin Ratsnake advise

Wolverton Dec 31, 2005 12:32 PM

Awhile back I asked for advise on a young Mandarin Ratsnake I have. I just wanted to thank everyone for the input and post a follow-up.

The recommendation was for providing a moist hidebox for a snake that was unable to shed. I had to soak the snake everytime and it would become dehydrated, would not touch its water. I put in a moist hide box and the snake refused to use it. Then I merely mixed up moist carefresh and put it under dry carefresh on one end of the tank. I then covered most of the top with a book to keep evaporation down. I placed the water dish on the moist end. The snake began to feed better and has had no dehydration problems since.

So thanks for the advise, it worked out well. My previous experience with these animals was limited to imports, none of which lived long enough to display such a problem.

Another thing I've run across & haven't proven, but it seems to help, is supplementing the snake's diet with vitamin D. I did this with indigos, & Naja, & they seemed to have a lot better sheds.
I was putting a 50mg tablet in a rat once/month.
Cheers,
Max
