*IMPORTANT BREEDING QUESTION*

abrevaderci Dec 31, 2005 02:53 PM

Or at least it's important to me. LOL

My 8' female was all swelled up. I know my male bred her. So I thought she had already ovulated. Well I went out this morning and
she looked like she had swallowed a football. I freaked because I took out the male about 4 weeks ago. So I put the male back in and he is getting busy. My question is, is it to late or can the ova still be fertilized after ovulation? Thanks for your responses

Well in my opinion, if your male is courting her, then she hasn't yet ovulated. The swelling could've been the pre-ovulation swell, or absorbtion. I've never seen a male continue to be interested in the female once ovulation has occured. My advice for the future is to leave the male in until he completely loses interest, the female ovulates, and then goes into a shed cycle.
If a male copulates, it doesn't guarantee her to be gravid. I'd let him court her for awhile as long as they still appear healthy. I hope everything works out for you. Keep us posted, David
