How many crickets per day? One last ??? from the newbie!!

Wyocuttergirl Jan 01, 2006 10:27 AM

So, I read a bunch of the old posts here yesterday and I read one that said they can eat too many crickets and founder like a horse. Being a horse owner, that ain't good. Our girl (Name now in dispute. 6 year old wants to call her Snappy now.) has gobbled up as many as I'll let her have. Yesterday I fed her 4 crickets. The 2 days previous she ate so many it was ridiculous. Thursday she cleaned up 12 of them. Friday she ate another 10 or 12. She pooped like mad yesterday. So, I cut her back. She just came out of a molt (right term??). Then yesterday when I put the crickets in she ate them as fast as I could put them in the tank.

Thanks for all the help. You guys are great!! Especially since I don't have a Herp Vet anywhere near. Closest one is probably an 8 or 9 hour drive away. The guy at the pet store where I buy crickets said lizards can go 2 weeks without eating and I should just buy her allotted amount of crickets for the week and put them in her cage and when she ate them she was done for the week. Seems, after reviewing the old posts yesterday, that's misinformation.

Thanks again!!

Deb

P.S. For some reason she's letting my husband handle her, but is still running from me.

P.P.S. Vonnie - Mark Russell is a friend of mine. Very funny guy!!!!

Your one of us now , you BETTER keep talking to us!

If Snappy (I like that) wants to eat I would let her, thats great, you have no idea the amount of people that have lizards that will not eat. If she healthy and active and wants to eat, hey I say let her.

How old is she do ya know? The younger they are the more they will eat, I usually feed my sub- adults a few times a day a few crickets each time. The adults are fed once but let them eat there fill.

That petstore owner is way off, you have to gutload those bugs so they have some nutritional value for your collared when she eats them. If left in the tank for days or week or so, it's like eating an empty shell. Your lizard is only as healthy as what you feed it, ya know.

Sounds as though Snappy likes men, hahahhahahaa, are you apprehensive at all when you go to pick her up? Good thing is if she allowing your Hubby to pick her up, then you can see she is capable of being friendly. Just keep trying!

Oh another buddy with a horse, geesh, I'm coming to your house too, Elan, a friend on here has a horse also. Love them, just never have had the place for one just in my mind as my DREAM HORSE !

Keep posting , show us your new girl when ya get the chance we love pics!

You migh be sorry!! I can be a pain in the a*# if you give me free rein with the e-mail!!

I'll happily post a photo if someone tells me how. I took a pretty good one this morning.

I am feeding the crickets flukers orange cube things. Is that enough??

I do not know how old she is. I assume young. My sister bought her at a pet store. Any way to tell?

I'm not apprehensive at all. I grew up catching horny toads (short horned lizards) and sagebrush lizards, the only two native lizards to Wyoming. When I was a kid, I kept a couple as pets for a few years, Salt and Pepper. Seems I was as creative as my own children. Not bothered at all, but she'll hang out on his shoulder and she won't on mine right now. When things settle down after the Holidays I'll have more time to spend quietly with her.

I have 2 Quarter horses. I am a competitive cutter. (Hence, wyocuttergirl) Cutting is when a horse and rider separate one cow from a herd and maintain control of that animal away from the herd. Cattle being herd animals, the cow tries to return to his buds and we try to prevent it showing the judge we are in control. 2 1/2 minutes of competitve bliss. It's incrediblly precise and a chess game. Every stride of your horse you have to be thinking, thinking and workin' it! So I have a gelding, Col Dynamite (aka Dynamite) and a mare, HR Tiny Travaler (aka Tiny). I compete once or twice a month. It's my therapy.

Let me know on the pic and I'll post.

I generally will add in oatmeal and some veggies sprinkled with the vita-cal supplement. As Bonnie and Clyde hated their crickets sprinkled with vita-cal.

On the cricket numbers question, I have seen Bonnie out eat Clyde on most days. Though these days they are both brumating and without any help from me. They just sleep most of the day away and I just make sure they get watered every couple of days.

Plus, once I figure out how to operate my new digi cam I'll post pics.

Testing, testing . . . I'm trying to post a photo of Snappy and one of me cutting. Not a good one of me, but I love the look in the horse's eyes. He's really intense.

Hey Eve, I'm going to start thinking you're my long lost twin if you have Border Collies too!!!
