Post some pictures of it back and head. People on here can help you tell the difference.

V niloticus

It has approximately 7 bands between the shoulders. It also has a bluish-purple tongue. If it is a larger monitor, it will be thin and narrow; the head will be slim and pointed.

V. ornatus

It has approximately 5 bands between the shoulders. It has a pink tongue. If it is larger, it will be bulkier; its head will be a bit wider and less streamlined.

To me, the tongue color is the best thing to look and it give you a good idea...

I have had both.

Its been 2yrs since I have last used the boards here. So this is all back to old times.

Anyhow, from what i understand yes something about the bands but i have heard that this is not always the case. Not sure exactly.

The one ornate I had had extreme yellows and what not. Whereas the normal nile is more dull and bland colored.

Another thing is I have heard its like the white/black throat thing. They are both actually the same lizard but its just locality which makes the color variations. Like near the cape of africa you find more whitee throatrs, etc.

So just thought I'd throw those out to you....

Again, I am no pro but these are the things I have gathered in my questioning.....

oops, I had forgoten how to use this board. Sorry, haha. I figured it was like so many other board where you can see all the posts in one. I forgot to scroll down some.

Also, if i remember right, these board also do not udpate. So if you post something new, it will stay with that post meaning be it at the top or bottom of the page. In other words, other boards, if the post is almost to page two, a new post comes in, it goes back to the top.

Oh well. I guess they answered it for you.

Post up the pictures so people can see what it is.....
