How do I go about getting import balls from africa?

cyn Jan 01, 2006 11:55 PM

I've seen some pretty interesting looking imports lately and I'm wondering what the import laws are or how to go about getting something like that done and who to contact.

I had an article on how balls get imported from Africa...don't know what happened to it. I DO know, that you'll have a hell of a time trying to get any big new morphs. You'll have to compete with VPI, NERD, BHB, Pete Kahl, and Ralph Davis (just to name a few) for the outstanding ones. I'm sure someone can chime in on liscences and stuff...

I know this wont help you get any closer to importing a new morph, but unless you are planning on spending more than $100k, just forget about it and spend your money on something already established. You can get ripped off very easy trying to import by your self. Call some of the big guys, buy them lunch and offer them a comission to pass some deals on to you that they dont want, or have gone higher in price than they want to pay. The new stuff is not just found in a pile of snakes imported, they are picked out by the feild collectors now and sold as something special. If you just want to import by the thousand for sale in the US, find another big importer to buy a huge quantity from, that way no paper work for you, and you will pay $5 a head insted of $4.

Good luck.

there is a reptile wholesale store here in montreal
the could possibly set you up with the information you would need.
i know they recently received a shippment of 300 bps from africa, they might be able to arrange for pictures so you could choose a snake.
i got my 2 baby cb bps from them last spring, and they are doing very well.
here is their information
514-933-1916
3618, rue Notre-Dame Ouest,
Montréal, QC H4C 1P5
ps the owner is english
it is however my personal conviction that you should not support the import of wild caught reptiles. the people capturing them have little concern for the ecosystem where they take the snakes, and i know some areas are so depleted that they cant find enough snakes to sell anymore. imagine if people went out and started ripping apart the local land forms and removing every wild snake they found around where you live. how long would it take before there were none left?
there are also health concerns with wild caught snakes, if you dont have the place to quarantine all the animals individually, or the money to get each snake dewormed, demited, and a full checkup you shouldnt try to import them.

Yes I agree imported snakes suck!! How much do you think actually goes back to the comunitee or back into preserving wildlife over there. I bet they get about five cents a snake! I think it's horrible the way they are exported and I will never buy an import or buy anything from the big boys who import(which is most of them). You can imagine how much they paid for some of these very expensive wild caught morphs and now they are getting rich off them!!

just something I'm anal about. Snakes do not come from africa with mites, they are introduced to the snakes here by poor husbandry by the importers. The mites we find on our snakes do not occur in africa so if the snake is straight from africa to your local airport there will be no mites. There will be ticks and tons of internal parasites though.

I was wondering about that too. I know that the big breeders won't give up their contacts, but could someone point me in the right direction to finding some myself, aside from flying to africa? I am willing to spend the money, I just need the contacts!
