Help from vulpina keepers

herpin1579 Jul 24, 2003 02:52 PM

I recently collected a few western fox snakes froma field here in Illinois. I kept them in a tank together and their poop contained hair from a field mouse. I have not tried feeding yet. What should I offer them? Two specimens are around 1.5 ft another around 2.5 and the last around 3.5. All seem in good health.

Wild caughts are notoriously hard to get to do well. If you can catch some of their natural prey and slowly try to wean them of by scenting on a domesticated mouse or rat that is probably going to be the way to go. I will tell you that a fox snakes metabolism seems to be higher than that of a typical "ratsnake". They need to be fed more often to keep good weight on them. Coming out of hibernation this year, I fed my female a small rat everyday for five days in a row! Every morning I would wake up and the lump would be gone! Now I feed about 2-3 mice twice a week and that seems to work ok for a maintenance schedule. Good luck! Fox snakes are great!
