OMG OMG OMG I found out why Kirmy has not been eating

jasonw Jan 02, 2006 01:13 AM

Well Today was feeding day once agan, Alberto took 6 large meal worms and when I lifted the hide to get Kirmy out and try this feeding thing agan I foundher under it with a single egg. I do not think the Egg is any good but placed it in a make shift incubater anyway. It was somwhat shrivled when I found it but hopfully it will blump back up. Anyhoo, She just finished eating and took 5 large worms so I am very hapy now, this was the last thing I expected and it has made it an awsome new years, On not so good of a note, Last time I weighed her she was only. 32.50G I do not believe she is even of breeding weight yet, I will have to check my Leo books but I am pretty sure that is way to light to be laying eggs am I corect?

Yes, that is awfully small. A minimum of 50 grams is what is recommended for a female. Has she been with a male?

Yes she has been with a male. She only left one egg witch I would guess would have something to do with her being just to darn small. She appears to be in great health. I am not seeing any signs that would make me believe she is stressed and best of all she finally ate a substantial meal last night.

I'm hoping for her long term health you are planning to remove her from the male?

Since it sounds like they are housed together, and he is surprised his female layed an egg, my hopes are not high that they will be serperated.

Yes she will be removed from the male. I know she is of breeding age acording to my books witch is at least 18 months but she is just way under weight to be breeding.

Just because she is too light to be breeding, doesn't mean that she won't, as you have unfortunately found out. It is your responsibility as their carer to make sure that no breeding should take place unless both geckos are in excellent health. I hope your female doesn't suffer from this experience.

Make sure she has plenty of calcium and some fatty food offered to help replenish her stores that have been used up in the laying process.

jason, I thought you had seperated the two way back when you first posted she wasn't eating, and we all told you that was the first thing to do. I'm very disappointed.

I did separate them way back when but I am pretty sure I stated in my post about there new enclosure that they were put back together and all was well. Maybe I forgot to mention it or you missed it. Anyhoo they are apart again now. I am not a pro by no means but she appears to be doing just fine.

Ok yes I just checked. At the very beginning to the post I stated they were both back together, You even replied to that message Geckogrl6 and raised no red flags to that fact. The post can be found at http://forums.kingsnake.com/view.php?id=972328,972328 I do not believe the egg came from them being together in the new enclosure but more than likely from when they were put together many many moons ago, They were put in the new enclosure on Dec 21st, That’s not enough time to get an egg is it? Other than that they were together several months ago before I separated them do to kirmy not eating. I am not dismissing the fact that male and female were together so there is no surprise there is an egg but according to my book a lone female may lay an egg or 2 that are not fertile from time to time, This kind of sounds right as last time they were together Alberto was just a tiny guy. Remember I said I am not dismissing it. In my book it is possible but not probable but then again all of you know more with respect to Leopard Geckos than I do.
