RES Sexing Question, This should be a good one

AndysTorts Jan 02, 2006 01:48 PM

I've got a nice size group of res, but one is around 6" but has a short tail (not nipped) with the vent hole near the shell, not mid way down the tail like a sign of a male, BUT it has super long claws on the front legs.......which is a sign of a male? anyone have any ideas? thanks

To accurately tell go by the position of the vent. Close to
body, female and far away, male.

thanks for the reply, that's what i was thinking, she was a captive raised turtle from a baby so there is a good chance its normal that it has some longer front nails since it really doesn't get a chance to wear them down, but the cloca is deff. very close to the shell like the rest of my other females, thanks

With captive-raised aquatics, if they were kept in the water, the nails usually aren't any longer than wild turtles. If anything, I've had it the other way around, where the nails of male painted turtles failed to grow due to improper husbandry.

I say put in another turtle, and see if it "flutters" at the other turtle. I've never seen a female slider flutter. Do you know how old these are, or what incubation temperatures the breeder used (if you're getting in large groups, I assume they're coming from a breeder?)?
