Gravid females, behaviors and temperatures

5rings Jan 03, 2006 10:44 AM

Hey guys n gals

I bred two of my girls a few weeks back and I think (fingers crossed) they will lay soon. Both obviously ovulated. Both have repeatedly given the male a cold shoulder after two weeks of being hooked up and both are very restless and fat. Thats where the similarity ends. My red female is spending more time in her nest box (82-85 degrees)and basking in higher temps (85-90) while the yellow female wont go in her nest box but for a few minutes. The yellow female also spend most of her time in the cool end of the (80-85) cage but returns to the basking spot infrequently. By my calculations the yellow female should be laying eggs very, very soon, yet I feel no eggs when I palpitate her. Is it time for an ultrasound or am I missing something completely?

Sounds like a nervous Papa to me. The worst that could happen is your yellow is not gravid. You could survive that and she will probably suprise you. Are the three proven?

Hey Steve,
Gravid females will usually feel hard to the touch when you lift them or palpate their underside or belly and will usually have a flat belly. Their sides can be quite distended, but again it will depend on the number of egg's she is carrying. Even small females carrying a small number of egg's, will exhibit what I call a flat belly. Egg laying will vary from female to female, however, as a general guide, you can count on females laying egg's after their post ovualation shed (prelay-shed), at about 24-40 days from that recorded period. Kara G., had a female go 40 days before laying. So it is not uncommon. My females have all laid their egg's from 24-28 days POS.
