Eucalyptus mulch?

raingerjoe Jan 03, 2006 02:55 PM

Has anybody used or even heard of using eucalyptus mulch as a substrate for BRB's?

I've noticed from using it in my yard, that it retains moisture and repels insects. It also has a very soft fiber consistency.
And no obvious odor.

Seems like it would make a great substrate, I just wanted to make sure it doesn't have any toxins that can harm the snakes.

Joe,
....I am really not sure about eucalyptus mulch. My guess is that because it is noxious to insects and arachnids like cedar is noxious to the bugs that it is also not good for snakes. It is the oil in cedar and similar woods which protects them from bugs and also makes them harmful to reptiles. I do not know how similar eucalyptus oil is to cedar oil.
