Please help me ID this snake

buffysmom Jan 03, 2006 03:34 PM

I posted this down below, but haven't gotten any feedback yet. I'm eager to know more about this new boa I got from a friend.
She got it from someone else who didn't provide any info. It's about 4 ft. long, is particularly dark (hyper-melanistic) and has a beautiful belly that looks like gray granite. The irridescence is always there. He shed about a week before this pic was taken. Off-camera, he looks as if he's made of black velvet. Any ideas what kind of boa it is? I've named him Elvis.

Any help would be appreciated.

looks to possibly be a Type II Anery Central American Boa
no way to prove (without documentation/pics) without proving it out yourself....

sometimes, your average central american can darken up drastically as they mature... could be just that.

Good luck.. -Joe

Thanks. About how big does the average central American boa get?

Thanks so much! I'm thrilled to hear that! If he's pretty much full grown now, or will stay relatively small (for a boa), then I can keep him I really wouldn't be able to keep a boa that's going to reach 8-10 feet as I just don't have the room.
I agreed to foster this snake, but am hoping I'll get to keep him.
Thanks again for the help!

My friend called today & said the guy he got the snake from said it's a male Nicaraguan. Do you think that's true? If so, how big do they get? I have him in a 40 gallon breeder tank & hope to be able to keep him in that long-term. It looks like a good fit for him at this point...

I believe that's what I said... if I didn't say Nicaraguan, I probably said Central American, but yes, looks to be a Nicaraguan.
I had mentioned these usually get 4-5 feet as adults.

I think I responded to someone elses post about this too... might have posted this there or here.. don't remember.

Your tank would be adequate size for a male, but you would probably want it a bit larger for a female, and you may want to eventually get a better enclosure for him. Glass tanks are probably the worst of enclosures.
It's kind of like a Bamboo Hutt, and you have to do alot to control the temps and humidity, as opposed to a finished home with central heat/AC.

He may also be Type II Anerythristic, which would raise his value from over $100 to approx over $1000 ..

Take care, Joe

Thank you again, Joe. I don't know much about boa subspecies other than my Hog Islands, so I really appreciate you taking the time to help me identify Elvis.
