Question - New Hatch

luciano_van Jan 03, 2006 04:09 PM

I've an egg just pipped last night, but the neonate still remain within the egg. I would like to know when will the neonate leave the egg?

what species? my russian torts sometimes stay in the egg for 48 hours before they "pop" out. even after hatching they sometimes return to the egg shell to park.

Oh I forgot that. It's a T Kleinmanni (Egyptian)

very nice.

They can stay in the egg for up to 4 days but 2 or 3 is more usual.

I always suggest that the egg be placed on a slightly damp paper towel or cloth towel in a confined space like a tea cup. Place that in the incubator and leave it alone. Everytime, in my experience, they have absorbed all the yolk before hatching. Once they leave the egg remove the shells and leave the tortoise on the moist substrate until all the folds and wrinkles have smoothed out. Then you can place the little one in a more permanent enclosure.

I've got some good suggestions for you once you reach that point.

Congratulations. That species is not commonly bred in captivity but the frequency is increasing.

If you like you can send me your email and I'll send you some articles.
