Lots of Breeding Questions

LeoDude7 Jul 24, 2003 04:20 PM

Okay...When is it "breeding season"? Do you need a special setup to get your geckos in the "mood"? How long does it take for a mother gecko to lay her eggs? How do you tell if a gecko is pregnant? How long does it take for eggs to hatch? Where do you put the eggs? What should the conditions be for the eggs(temp, humidity)? What do new-born laos eat? Thanks. (I know how to care for geckos, but not breed them...sorry!)

normally breeding season is in spring and early summer. you don't need a special setup for breeding, just put the male and female together and they should do their thing. a female gecko should be about a year old and WELL above 40g (above 50g is alot better) before you breed her. a female leo will lay her first clutch about a month after mating, and will lay around 3-5 more clutches after that. leo eggs need to be incubated at a pretty stable temp between 80-90, lower 80s creating females, upper 80s creating males. i put my leo eggs in a tupperware container filled halfway with moist perlite (soak the perlite in water and then dabb the excess off with paper towels). bury the eggs halfway in the perlite, make sure they are in the same position you found them in (don't roll them over!). then cover the container back up and place it in a still air incubator (hovabator). eggs incubated for females often hatch between 50-60 days of incubation and eggs incubated for males may hatch between 40-50 days of incubation depending on the temp you incubated at. before you think of breeding, get a book with a detailed section devoted to breeding.
