question on King and Corn being kept in the same room

desertkingsnake Jan 04, 2006 02:33 AM

I just got a bloodred corn at the start of august and i'm currently keeping him in the same room as my 16 y/o desert king. If the corn climbs the side of his tank he's in clear view of the king. Right now she's brumating and hasn't eaten in about 1 1/2-2 months. Could having them in sight of each other like this stress them out? Also if they weren't in view of each other would the smell of eachother still weird them out? Any advice?

i'll try to offer my opinion.

That's a tough one, see you have to look at all snakes individually so a generalization wouldn't fit here at all. i have some kings that smell another snake and go bananas even after having a Large meal then some kings that seem to ignore the scent of another snake.

I'm not sure how close you have your setups or how much of an aggressive feeding response your king has but i'd say a calm king in brumation shouldn't be effected by the scent of a corn. if you notice excessive movement (search for food) on a regular basis (which i strongly doubt will happen) i think a move is in order

Hope that helped a lil

Since they are from opposite sides of the country I do not think the corn will associate the king with a predator. But you never know. The king may however associate the corn with food. Has he ever eaten another snake? Watch them both closely after brumation and take it from there.

I keep my kings and corns in a rack system, so they can definately smell eat other. This has not caused any feeding problems for the snakes. In the rack system, they cannot see each other. You did not mention how far apart your cages are. It's possible that the corn cannot see far enought to be threatened by the king. In any case, if you suspect there's a problem, you might want to rearrange your setup so the snakes cannot see each other.

In some you'll see corns next to kings next to ratnskaes next to Asian ratsnakes next to boas next to geckos next to ball pythons next to ...

If you want, place a piece of cardboard between the cages to block the view. Even put some distance between the cages if you want. Keep in mind though that most keepers pay little attention to proximity, and it doesn't seem to be a detriment to the snakes.

their tanks are only about 2.5 ft away from eachother and the corn's tank is about a foot higher up than the king's. My king has never eaten another snake, although i'd probably feed her snakes if i could get them at a decent price. It's not a huge concern of mine, i just wanted to know if this has been an issue for people in the past.

My first snake was a grey rat snake. It was so tame I always hand fed it like Jetzen does.

I then bought several kingsnakes and milks and kept them in the same room. The rat snake was impossible to handle thereafter. Any
movement by his cage at all would cause him to coil into an "S" shape and strike repeatedly at the glass.

It could be a coincidence or caused by some other change the addition of other snakes caused. I sold the snake and haven't kept corns or rats since, but I know people who keep both with no apparent problems. Still, it was a strong coincidence!
