How much should my king be eating?

kta Jan 04, 2006 09:53 AM

Heres a pic of my California Kingsnake. You can get a good idea from this pic the size of the food he is currently eating. At the moment he eats one of these each fortnight. I used to try one a week, but he never wanted to eat this much, he would only actually take one fortnightly. He is about 1.5 years old. Should I try him on one a week again, or move him up a mouse size?

He seems well proportioned. I would try larger food items since the mice you're feeding are about the same diameter as your snake. They can injest 1.5x their diameter. You might try once a week, but if you are not going to be breeding him it really doesn't matter how fast he grows. Many studies have shown that reduced food intake can lead to longer lifespans, so don't worry that he eats less you could have him for many more years to come.

Acutally, I still don't have an idea of sizes from all of the pictures that I see posted on here. However, I'll give you a quick summary of my California Kingsnake's eating habits.

My snake is about 40 inches long and weighs around 315 grams. He has some longitudinal ridges on his back when he moves in certain ways, and I'm told that these ridges are a sign that he is underweight. I'm taking him to a vet on Friday and will ask about his size. He eats an adult mouse of 20 to 25 grams every week. When I bought him, the store was feeding him pinkies and fuzzies. I started on these and graduated him to adult mice. He was pretty hungry at first and ate very aggressively. Sometimes, he's less aggressive now.

I hope this information helps. If you know the length and weight of your California Kingsnake, I'd like to hear it.

Thanks,

Bill

It's not how many snakes you have. It's how happy and healthy you can keep them.

sorry, I dont know the weight and length of my kingsnake, but i'll try and take a picture of him next to something like a banknote so you can make an estimation.
Anyway, i've started my snake on one a week now. I fed him last wednesday, and I offered him one today and he took it straight away. Hopefully he will keep this up then ill keep him on one a week. If he seems to be doing ok on this then ill move him up a size as well
